The term "Muffler Man" belongs to a series of fiberglass giants that began life in southern California during the 1960's as an advertising scheme. The first giants were made for a series of muffler shops and held a muffler with pipes attached in its hands. This is the reason for so many of them have an up-turned right hand and a down-turned left. Since then several variations have been produced which are shown in this gallery. I understand that there are around 200 of the giants in America and a couple in Canada. They still serve as advertising but are used as mascots, yard decorations, and icons. I have photographed 70 of these people and will continue to search for them on all our road trips. Again, Americana at its best!
